On 22 November 2024, Slovenia made a significant stride in the fight against financial discrimination by unanimously passing a law affirming the Right to be Forgotten for individuals who have faced cancer, Hepatitis C, or HIV.
This landmark legislation ensures that survivors are no longer penalised for their medical history by insurers and financial institutions once considered cured. The waiting period for the Right to be Forgotten is set at 5 years for those diagnosed before the age of 21 and 7 years for others, empowering survivors to rebuild their lives without stigma.
Slovenia’s action underscores a growing commitment across the EU to protect survivors’ rights and promote equity. Survivorship is not just about overcoming illness—it’s about reclaiming life fully.
